Flag Pole
Intro to Robotics and Mechatronics
The Project:
The goal of this assignment is to replicate the motion of Mario (or another character) sliding down the flag pole at the end of every Super Mario Bros level. In mechanical terms, your goal is to convert rotary motion (from your motor) into linear motion through a system of linkages.
Your mechanism must have at least 3 moving linkages. Stationary/fixed linkages do not count.
Mario or whatever character you choose must move in a vertical straight line for at least 10 cm.
You may not use slots or tracks to keep your character in line.
Motion must be powered by a motor (i.e. you can't rely on gravity to move the character for you).
Designing the Linkages:
After a bit of online research, we decided on a Peaucellier–Lipkin linkage. We used MotionGen to get to know the linkage system better and play around with dimensions.

After playing around with the dimensions we used OnShape to create outlines of all the different parts we needed. We finally laser-cut them on acrylic. To finish the design off we added a bowser flag and etched Mario going down the flag pole.
